Empowerment Meeting and an Awareness Propagating Meeting to Commemorate World Aids Day

Empowerment meeting for HIV/AIDS infected and affected people

On 30-11-2013 prior to World Aids Day, an empowerment meeting was held at Paasathottam (Dindigul) for HIV/AIDS infected and affected people. A total of 141 clients, including nineteen children, took part in it. The meeting was graced by the presence of honorable chief guests: Most Rev. P.Anthony Papusamy, the Bishop of Dindigul Diocese, Dindigul District Social Welfare Officer, Doctor Harshavarshini, Pallottine priest Deva and other well-wishers. The meeting started with lighting of lamp and a prayer song. Speeches were delivered by the honourable chief guests highlighting a healthy lifestyle, cultivating ‘Never say Die’ spirit, propagating awareness of AIDS to others and preventing from spreading AIDS to others.

‚Äč Most Rev. P. Anthony Papusamy, the Bishop of Dindigul, in his note encouraged the HIV/AIDS infected and affected people to live happily with a positive mind set hoping for a better future. He motivated the people to come out of their low-self esteem and depression to prove their worth in this discriminating society and ended his note. People were entertained by well presented cultural programme staged by Our Lady School of Nursing students and children under our care; guests were felicitated and with the distribution of provisions to the clients the meeting came to an end leaving smile on everyone’s face. Our selfless work, care and attention towards the HIV/AIDS infected and affected people were well appreciated by all the guests. They departed from our friary leaving their wishes and prayers for our future activities and with the words of encouragement “Well done, carry on the good work.”

An Awareness Propagating Meeting to Commemorate World Aids Day

On 1-12-2013 Flame conducted an awareness propagating meeting to commemorate World AIDS Day at Dindigul bus stand with due permission from the police officials. Honorable Chief Guests, students from Peace College, some beneficiaries and others participated in this meeting. Honorable Dindigul District Collector Mr. Venkatachalam, I.A.S declared the awareness propagating meeting open and read aloud the pledge formulated by TANSACS on HIV/AIDS. It was followed by distribution of pamphlets to public. Banners, pamphlets and handbills on HIV/AIDS were displayed in the respected place for public’s view and use. A signature campaign was organized to create public awareness on HIV/AIDS. Mr. Para Vasudevan, police inspector, kick-started the drive followed by other dignitaries and the general public in an affirmation of their interest in creating an awareness of AIDS, not delimiting the dignity of HIV patients, fighting against the social discrimination and social stigma inflicted on the HIV patients, and in lending an helping hand to those who are infected and affected by AIDS. Moving and thought-provoking speeches were delivered by the guests, awareness songs were sung by positive people (HIV patients) and heart moving testimonies of agonies and pains were shared by our clients. The day’s programme was broadcasted in Pasumai radio (the radio partner of the entire programme). The meeting came to an end at 1.00 p.m. It was all well covered by press and media. We got a positive feed back from all the guests and from the public, too. May God be praised

Christmas gathering

In the month of December 2013, the monthly meeting was held from Dec 21 to 22 in view of pre-Christmas celebrations with the clients. ‘May we be born anew’ - was the theme for the monthly meeting. All our prayer services, Sunday Eucharist, talks and group discussions evolved around this theme. On Dec 21 afternoon, we organized a medical camp for the patients with the help of Dr. Kalavathi and nurse Jennitha on our premises. And on Dec 22 morning after the Eucharistic celebration with the clients, we began our pre-Christmas celebrations on a joyful note. Servite sisters from St. Joseph’s School convened the programme. The principal of the school delivered the Christmas message on peaceful and meaningful living with a renewed spirit. Wishing everyone a happy Christmas and a happy New Year Fr. Anand, ofm, in his keynote address, stressed on God’s unconditional love and of His gracious presence in everyone’s life. And with a prayerful blessing, he ended his message.

After the colorful cultural events (performed by children) and felicitation, the meeting was concluded with the hymn “Lord make me an instrument of your peace”- in Tamil. Followed by lunch, distribution of provisions, new clothes as Christmas gift to all our clients including 70 of our children, Noni nutrition tonic and Horlicks for HIV/AIDS infected and affected children. Thus the joyful pre-Christmas celebration, with the clients, came to a happy ending. The prayers and celebrations together eased the painful hearts of many and all returned home happily.

Pongal and Republic Day Celebration

During the monthly meeting for the HIV clients from Jan 24-26, 2014, Pongal and Republic Day were also celebrated. As many as 115 clients, including 18 children, took part in it. The celebrations, actually, started on the eve of Republic Day with a prayer service after the morning input sessions and medical camp in the afternoon. On Jan 26, our clients cooked Pongal at 5.30 a.m. after a short prayer and had rangoli competition. Sr. Venentia FSJ, the former Mother General, also joined us in our celebration. We had a solemn mass at 7.15 a.m followed by hoisting of the National Flag. Having been inspired by the activities of Flame, the Panchayath President and Vice-President of our area, who took part in the event, appreciated the friars for their good work and assured of their cooperation in conducting awareness programmes in all the villages across the panchayat. We had games, cultural programme and distribution of prizes from 9.30 a.m to 12.45 p.m. Laughter, joyful voices, giggling, clapping of hands and singing resounded in every corner of Paasathottam; children running around, elders playing pranks on each other and working together in keeping our surroundings clean added pleasure to our eyes. The memorable celebrations ended with sumptuous lunch, distribution of Noni tonic, Horlicks, sugarcane and provisions. With sugarcane in their mouths, joy in their hearts and smile on their faces, our children wished us goodbye; with provisions on their heads, cherishing moments of the day’s celebration in their minds and wishing that the joy may continue in their lives, our clients made their way towards the vehicles, which had been arranged to transport them till the bus stand. And with joy in our hearts, we the Friars at Dindigul, in gratitude thanked God for making this event a success.
